FREN 3010 French Structure & Composition

Prerequisite: FREN 2002. General review of grammar through composition and other written activities, such as summaries, correspondence, descriptions, narration, literary analysis, and other rhetorical and culturally appropriate forms. Students are highly encouraged to take FREN 3010 and FREN 3020 concurrently.

FREN 3020 French Conversation & Diction

Prerequisite: FREN 2002. Emphasis on the improvement of pronunciation and conversation skills while developing vocabulary and communicative structures. Conversation topics will include a wide range of situations, themes, and readings. Students are highly encouraged to take FREN 3010 and FREN 3020 concurrently.

FREN 3030 The Pleasure of Reading

Prerequisites: FREN 3010 and FREN 3020 or permission of instructor. This course is designed to help students enjoy reading comfortably in French. We will read from a wide variety of literary and non-literary texts: newspaper articles, web pages, social media posts, song lyrics, comic books, poetry, and short stories. Frequent and varied writing and speaking assignments will consolidate learning of vocabulary, structures, and cultural knowledge and allow students to pursue individualized research.

Prerequisites: FREN 3010 and FREN 3020. A survey of the historical, sociological, philosophical, literary, and artistic developments of France up to the French Revolution.

FREN 3120 French Culture & Civ II

Prerequisites: FREN 3010, FREN 3020. A survey of the historical, sociological, philosophical, literary, and artistic developments of France and the Francophone world from the French Revolution to today.

FREN 3210 Survey of French Literature I

Prerequisites: FREN 3010, FREN 3020. Study of the development of French literature from the beginnings to Rousseau. Study of principal trends. Reading of representative authors.

FREN 3220 Survey of French Literature II

Prerequisites: FREN 3010, FREN 3020. Study of the development of French literature from Rousseau to the present time. Study of principal trends. Reading of representative authors.

FREN 3310 Intro to French Linguistics

Prerequisite: FREN 2002. This course provides an introduction to the linguistic analysis of Modern French. Students will develop the basic skills of linguistic analysis in order to understand how the French language works. This course will examine four different levels of French language: the phonology (sounds), the morphology (internal structure of words), the syntax (ordering of elements within the phrase), and the lexis (vocabulary).

FREN 3940 Independent Study

Prerequisites: FREN 3010 and FREN 3020. Consideration of topics in which courses are not otherwise offered but for which there is a current need. Subject matter varies. This course is repeatable for credit.

FREN 3950 Service Learning

Prerequisites: FREN 3010, FREN 3020. This course will provide students with the opportunity to work on service projects, utilizing skills related to their major in non-profit and service organizations. This course is repeatable for credit.
