PHIL 4346 Philosophy and Film
This course will apply philosophical perspectives to film through two distinct lenses: theory and practice. We will begin with philosophy of film. This first half of the course will engage generic definition (how do we define film itself, horror, or noir?), artistry, narration, and emotion. We will discuss intention and meaning, spectatorship and representation. The second half of the class will shift to philosophy through film. We will enter the debate about the value of film for the practice of philosophy and explore philosophical themes through a variety of genres.
