THEA 1100 Theatre Appreciation

Survey and critical appreciation of theatre. The study of the theatrical experience, so as to give the student an understanding, awareness and respect of the history, talents, skills and traditions that go into the practice of live theatre. Attendance at GCSU theatre productions required.

This course was previously listed as THEA 1105 Theatrical Heritage.  Students may not earn credit for both THEA 1100 and THEA 1105.

THEA 1105 Theatrical Heritage

The study of the theatrical experience, so as to give the student an understanding, awareness and respect of the history, talents, skills and traditions that go into the practice of live theatre. Attendance at GCSU theatre productions required.

Effective Fall 2024, this course will be replaced by THEA 1100 Theatre Appreciation. THEA 1100 will automatically fulfill any requirement that previously required THEA 1105. Students may not earn credit for both THEA 1100 and THEA 1105.

THEA 1125 Audition/Portfolio Workshop

Prerequisite: Theatre major or minor restriction. Overview of the department and preparation for a successful academic career at GC. Students will gain practical experience in audition/portfolio techniques and resume writing.

THEA 1160 Stagecraft

Prerequisite: Must be a Theatre major/minor or have instructor's permission. Basic principles of scenic, lighting and sound materials and equipment; methods of construction and handling of scenery, lighting and props; basic theatre safety and equipment maintenance. Participation in GC theatre productions and lab hours required. Required of majors prior to taking higher-level courses.

THEA 1160L Stagecraft Lab

THEA 1200 Introduction to Design

Prerequisite: THEA 1160. Theatre design with an emphasis on basic design principles and aesthetics. Beginning exercises in scenic, lighting, properties, sound, and costume design. Introduction to various artistic media and techniques. Participation in GC theatre productions and lab hours required. Required of majors prior to taking higher-level courses.

THEA 1200L Introduction to Design Lab

40 lab hours performed during the semester.

THEA 1220 Costume Construction

Prerequisite: Must be a Theatre major/minor or have instructor's permission. Instruction in the basic techniques of stage costume construction and Costume Shop operation. Practical experience is gained through the application of learned techniques in laboratory work and working on University theatre production. Participation in academic theatre productions and lab hours required.

THEA 1300 Introduction to Acting

Prerequisite: Must be a Theatre major/minor or have instructor's permission. Introduction to acting techniques and characterization methods, with an emphasis on stage movement and vocal work in application to limited text. Participation in GC theatre auditions required. Required of majors prior to taking higher-level courses.

THEA 1310 Improv for Social Change

This participatory course emphasizes lab study in group improvisational acting, theatrical, dynamics, performance and role-playing, particularly as employed toward problem-solving and social change. Theorists such as Brazilian Augusto Boal and Jacob Moreno will be considered in discussion and performance. Students will expand their acting potential and ability to work creatively in social groups by developing group theatrical presentations based on personal ideas related to problem themes. Critiques of ideas and performances are an essential component of this course.
