ARTS 1000 Drawing I

This course is an introduction to drawing from direct observation of still life, landscape, and the human figure. Media includes charcoal, graphite, and ink. Additional studio fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

ARTS 1101 Art Appreciation

This course focuses on fostering an awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the visual arts. Through exposure to art images throughout history, students will build an artistic vocabulary that allows for the constructive analysis of art objects. Students will also gain an understanding of the interaction of art with other important aspects of culture including politics, history, religion, and science.

This course was previously listed as ARTS 1105 Understanding Visual Art.  ARTS 1101 will automatically fulfill any requirement that previously required ARTS 1105.  Students may not earn credit for both ARTS 1101 and ARTS 1105.

ARTS 1105 Understanding Visual Art

This course seeks to provide the student with a range of skills in perception, comprehension, and a basic vocabulary of words and concepts to enable the student to acquire basic skills in comprehending visual art forms.

Effective Fall 2024, this course will be replaced by ARTS 1101 Art Appreciation. ARTS 1101 will automatically fulfill any requirement that previously required ARTS 1105. Students may not earn credit for both ARTS 1101 and ARTS 1105

ARTS 1110 Art and Ideas

This course addresses important themes in the history of art though an analytical study of major works of art and architecture. Students will engage with works of art by learning how to look at, think about, write about, and critically discuss their form, materials and techniques, meaning, function, theoretical concepts, and historical contexts. Course themes and works of art will vary according to the instructor.

ARTS 1201 Three-Dimensional Design

Continued study of the elements and principles of design and their application in three dimensions. Additional studio fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

ARTS 1620 Intro to the Computer in Art

Introduces the computer as a creative and art career support tool. The basics of digital imaging and web design are taught while considering the work of contemporary artists and designers. No prerequisites. Additional studio fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.
